What it is

Memories of Murder follows detectives investigating a series of crimes in a provincial area during the 1980s. It draws on a real case, but its characters and development are fiction. Since its 2003 release it has been a frequent reference point in discussions of Korean crime cinema and recurs whenever the director's later work is explained. As the title suggests, it can also be read as a film less about the case itself than about how that era is remembered and what memory leaves behind.

A procedural that withholds the answer

The basic contract of a procedural is that the culprit is revealed at the end. This film does not honour that contract. The audience follows the clues and does not arrive at a conclusion, and that frustration becomes part of what the film is conveying. It borrows the form of the genre and deliberately withholds the satisfaction the form promises. Rather than treating it as a puzzle about who did it, focusing on why the investigation never reaches its goal brings you closer to what the film intends.

Period as cause, not backdrop

The era here is not decoration for atmosphere. Limited forensic means, public force deployed elsewhere, and confession taking precedence over procedure operate as direct reasons the investigation fails. The result does not read as blaming incompetent individuals; it makes you look at the structure. For viewers who did not live through that time the landscape is unfamiliar, but that very unfamiliarity makes it vivid how much institutions and circumstances shape human judgement.

  • Technical and procedural limits drive whether the case can be solved
  • Humour and tension sit inside the same scene
  • Wide frames place figures small to convey powerlessness
  • The ending turns its gaze toward the audience

How it mixes tone

The film includes a considerable amount of humour while handling heavy material. That humour does not simply release tension; what follows immediately after laughing makes the discomfort worse. Mixing tone so the audience is never left in a settled emotional state recurs in the director's other work. That discomfort can also be read as a device that stops the audience from consuming the case purely as entertainment.

The source play and the people behind it

The film is based on Kim Kwang-lim's stage play Come and See Me, with a screenplay by Bong Joon-ho and Shim Sung-bo. It was Bong's second feature; the cast includes Song Kang-ho, Kim Sang-kyung and Park Hae-il, and the score is by the Japanese composer Taro Iwashiro. A central axis of the story is the clash between a local detective who works on instinct and legwork and a detective sent down from Seoul with a different method. The contrast between them also reflects contrasts in the society of the time — intuition against paperwork, the provinces against the centre — and watching how that contrast shifts over time is one of the film's key pleasures.

What to watch for the first time

There is no need to know the plot in advance, nor to read up on the real case before watching. Instead, keeping the following in mind makes it much easier to see how carefully each scene was designed.

  • How the two detectives' methods differ, and how they change
  • How the mood of a scene shifts right after a laugh
  • The alternation between open fields and a cramped interrogation room
  • Devices such as rain, darkness and sound that expose the conditions of the era

Links to the director's later work

Showing the structure behind individuals who look incompetent, borrowing a genre's framework only to twist its expectations, and fusing laughter and dread in a single scene are all approaches that recur in different forms in The Host, Mother and Parasite. That makes this a good place to start if you are new to the director. Since it was released a long time ago, its image quality and colour may feel different from recent films, so if a re-release or high-definition version is available, choose that.

Worth knowing before watching

Since it draws on a real case, it is better not to take its content as fact. The characters and the course of events are invented and differ from the actual investigation. Violence and interrogation scenes are not mild, so checking the rating first is advisable. Remembering that the real case had real victims and bereaved families is also the basic attitude this film asks of its audience.
